Any less or more time is detrimental to our health and has been linked to weight gain, diabetes and heart disease just to name a few problems.

Not only does your body use this time to regenerate and heal, but your brain uses this time to re pattern and organize thoughts and ideas.

Try a few of these techniques to ensure a deeper and longer night’s sleep:

1. Use a nightly pattern (30 – 60 minutes) to de-stress and wind down from the pressures of the day …yes, that includes turning off your phone and computer.
2. Lower the lighting, put on some soothing music (examples follow), and make a cup of herbal tea like Mothers Little Helper from David’s Tea.
3. Once in bed, lie on your back and put your hands on your belly or abdomen. Take long, deep breaths into your belly or abdomen to make them rise into your hands, like filling a balloon. Keep your attention on your breath instead of daily “mind chatter”.
4. Another one of my blog posts guides you through a sequential tightening and letting go of each body part starting with your toes.
5. Put on the sound of waves or Largo tempo (50-70 beats per minute) classical music. There are specific CDs that have been sequenced at the correct tempo to help slow down your heart beat. Suggestions are MOZART EFFECT Volume 2 by Don Campbell and the series RELAX WITH THE CLASSICS by the LIND INSTITUTE.
6. Don’t forget to put essential oils (1-3 drops) in your diffuser. My favorite potion is 1 drop each Marjoram, Lavender, and Lemon.

Sweet dreams!

CURRENT is a series of teaching units designed to teach teachers how to teach music in the classroom using “current” songs of today. It is aimed at Grades 5-9 or Middle School grades. Each volume follows curricular learning outcomes for Canadian provinces and USA National Standards.

CURRENT focuses on student creativity through expression of feelings and ideas. Students are encouraged to evaluate their own achievement and refine their performances and presentations with the goal of improving their ability. Group support is encouraged.

CURRENT chooses songs from English popular music around the world. I have taught students from over 40 countries. The songs come from the experience of middle school students. The focus is not so much factual as it is creative and an extension of valuing the arts from all cultures. Students are encouraged not to make quick judgements but develop personal choice based on knowledge, experience and practice. Teachers should learn the vocabulary specific to the arts (music, art, drama, and dance) and incorporate this vocabulary into lessons. There is a vocabulary sheet with each volume.

CURRENT chooses songs that invite emotional and intellectual responses. Students are encouraged to analyse the song in terms of lyrics and musical concepts through the student analysis and evaluation forms in each volume. There are no right or wrong answers so students are more comfortable taking risks. A safe environment is encouraged with support of classmates and teachers.

The Creative Process

CURRENT encourages the creative process through the following activities:

The songs are inspiring and have a positive message. Lyrics are screened for language.

The lyrics encourage discussion and imagination.

There are opportunities for group and individual performances. Each activity has a specific focus on a musical concept through listening or singing. Guidance is provided in the teacher notes at the end of the unit.

Students are encouraged to explore and experiment using basic skills which are taught in class. Guidance is provided in the unit plans.

Students are encouraged to produce work in stages of difficulty.

Students are encouraged to constantly revise and refine through individual and group efforts.

With each song, students are presenting, performing and sharing through the use of contemporary music.

There are opportunities to reflect and share ideas through student worksheets which provide the framework.

Volume 1, Number 2, uses DYNAMITE by Taio Cruz as the focus for this unit.
Use a calm soft voice, pronouncing the words slowly but not unnaturally. Listen to examples on the Internet and see if you can tell which voices make you relax and which ones are irritating. Start by teaching the difference between inhale (breath in through nose) and exhale (breath out through mouth).

Music is an incredible aid to relaxation. New research shows that slow music produces a relaxing effect and causes a decline in heart rate.

Some good music suggestions are:
Relax With The Classics - any in the series
Kim Robertson - gentle harp
The Mozart Effect - Heal the Body
Carlos Nakai - native flute

Find a place where you can have space to lie down. Lie down on your back, feet slightly apart, arms by your side. When you are comfortable, close your eyes.

Keeping your upper arms on the floor, rest your palms lightly on your stomach. Turn your attention to your breath. Breathe into your hands with easy slow breaths, feeling your stomach rise and fall. Consciously slow your breath down, making it smooth and deep. Continue focusing on your breath for few inhales and exhales.

Now bring your attention to the top of your head. In your mind, feel your scalp. Imagine it turning into Jello, releasing any tightness.

Now bring attention to your face. Begin with your forehead. Feel it turn into Jello, nice and loose. Now feel your eyes and your eyelids. Imagine the feeling as they become Jello. Continue with your chest and your jaw.

Now, turn your attention to your neck. Gently turn your head from side to side as the muscles release tightness. Breathe slowly and deeply and concentrate on releasing tension from your neck.

Let your awareness shift to your shoulders. Ask your muscles to release tension in your shoulders and start to sink into the floor like a wet noodle. Feel the tension releasing. Be gentle with yourself. Continue breathing slowly and deeply.

Next, move your attention down your arms and to your fingertips. With a deep exhale, release any tension that is stored in that area. You might feel like giving them a little wiggle.

Now, bring your attention to your chest. Breathe deeply as you sink deeper into the floor. Feel the tension leaving your body.

Next, turn your attention to your hips. Take few deep breaths and with each exhale, ask your body to release tension from your hips.

Continue with this through your thighs, calves, ankles, feet, and toes. Feel the stress leaving your body, replacing it with a sense of peace and calm.

When you have completed the cycle of releasing tension from all the parts of your body, continue breathing slowly. Be gentle with yourself. Feel the peace and relaxation flowing freely through your body.

When you are ready, bring yourself back to the present. Wiggle your toes, your fingers, open your eyes, and stretch gently.

Enjoy the sense of quietness and relaxation in your body. Return to this muscle relaxation technique often. With each practice, your relaxation will deepen.
My school had health week where we focused on something different every day that week. I was looking at the focus topics and came upon "Pyjama Day". "Great!" I thought. What on earth can I do with my music classes on "Pyjama Day"?

I started looking around on the internet and found lots of relaxation music and guided imagery stories so I decided to do that. I told the students to bring their favorite cuddly toy, blanket and pillow to music on this day. It was so great to see a long line of students, class after class, toting their teddy bears, pillows and blankets.

I had a carpeted room that I used for performances next to my classroom and had decorated it with a number of those battery fiberoptic lamps that change color (from the Dollar Store). When the students entered, lovely music filled the air as they found a place to lie down and get comfortable. I had a few stories prepared, and one on tape (Quiet Moments by Greg and Steve). I left the music on very soft and helped them do a simple relaxation starting from their toes up to their nose, taking deep breaths. Slowly the room became very still as the students felt themselves "become wet noodles" and sink into their blankets.

After that we took an imaginary trip on a cloud with Greg and Steve. Greg's voice is so velvety and soothing. To finish the class I put on another piece of soft music and started the story to a magic garden. Then I let them finish the story on their own using their own imagination. From grades 1 through 5, the students said "I want to stay!" When the class came to an end ... and from then on, students asked for our little piece of "magic" to finish every class.
There is a phenomenon around the world called the “flash mob”. The first one I saw was a few years ago done in a Belgian train station to a remix of Julie Andrew’s Do-Re-Mi.

The next big one to catch my attention was the Black Eyed Peas version of Got a Feelin’ for Oprah’s anniversary in <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Chicago</place></city>. 20,000 people turned out for that one.

In May, 2010 Eurovision had a song contest for the world’s largest flash mob dance held simultaneously in 10 cities across <place w:st="on">Europe</place>. Madcon won with the song GLOW and the choreography was put up on YouTube to learn. I decided to make this my final unit for the year and each class chose a song to choreograph and I taught the entire elementary school of 650 students the Eurovision version of GLOW.

Sections 3 and 4 were a bit too challenging for little ones so I simplified it using a couple of moves from Oprah and 2 line dance steps. If you do it, add your own flavour or get some talented students to work with sections 3 and 4.

A Mind Map is a very powerful graphic method which allows you to take notes while accessing the "whole" brain ... it uses the full range of cortical skills: language, pictures, connections, relationships -- awareness in a single unique manner.

The "Mind Map" originated and was trademarked in 1970 by Tony Buzan from England. This highly effective notetaking technique has since spread worldwide and is used by millions of people in all occupations.

This technique is one of many accelerated learning methods, to illustrate "whole brain learning" and releases the tremendous potential of the "brain".

Advantages of Mind Mapping

Mind Maps work the way the brain works, by associating randomly … not in nice neat lines. Radiant NOT linear!

Any idea has thousands of links in your brain … Mind Maps allow these associations to be recorded and reinforced.

The brain remembers key words and phrases, not sentences … just try remembering a number of sentences “exactly” from memory!

Because one uses key words and phrases, a lot more information will fit on the page.

Mind Maps are visual … the brain remembers pictures better than words.

Starting in the centre gives each detail equal importance rather than traditional numbering, not necessarily in order of importance.

The organization of a Mind Map is similar to the way your brain organizes ideas.

Because of its visual structure, Mind Maps are easy to review … like taking a mental picture.

My plan for CURRENT is a series of teaching units designed to teach teachers how to teach music in the classroom using “current” songs of today.

Volume 1, Number 1, uses FIREFLIES by Owl City and Adam Young as the focus for this unit.

When we learn, each of us will prefer to process new information through one of our senses.

Take the example of learning a dance routine:

VISUAL learners need to see the dance performed or look at the directions before trying the steps.

AUDITORY learners need to hear the directions and will usually say the directions to themselves as they do the steps.

KINESTHETIC learners need to actually go through the steps and “feel” what the dance is like.

Most teachers are not connecting with a large percentage of their audience in their presentations.

Research shows that 40% are visual learners, 40% are auditory and the remaining 20% are primarily kinesthetic.

Learning is dependent on the strategy used in the way the material is presented. A teacher usually teaches the way he/she was taught or in the style that he/she learns. Now if the style of the learner and teacher matches - SUCCESS! Mostly they are mismatched and the student feels comes out the loser, not the teacher.

Teachers need to learn to teach in a variety of styles to reach every student - sounds hard but isn’t really.

Have you ever noticed how talk show hosts, radio announcers and motivational speakers inject sound effects and music into their programs?

David Letterman uses effects from Paul Shaeffer’s band and the sound of glass breaking when he throws a card away.

Since I began noticing sound effects in presentations, a lot more stand out, from the voices of celebrities saying things which are taken out of context on purpose (MAKE MY DAY!), to song clips which can underline your message with humor.

If you even uttered a chuckle or tiny snicker, then the effect registered in your brain and at the same time the presenter’s message.

Years ago I produced a "Braindance Sound Effects" CD in the studio and a guide to accompany the CD. I sold a lot of copies. I have now turned this into 95 high quality MP3 files to accompany the book.

My book will give you the chance to address your students or audience with a greater impact on their listening and learning. I will provide you with useful examples for your next presentation. Try out a few sounds and soon you will be on your way.

IT’S SHOWTIME!
I developed this teaching unit a number of years ago in response to my students' request to "do rap" in music class. I created a guide to help students and teachers write a rap to help remember facts and rules. It is designed to be user-friendly and fun!

The lessons should carry you through an eight week period but could also springboard into many other areas such as song and poetry writing and creative movement. The lessons refer to our accompanying 20 RAP TRACKS (in MP3 format) and also outline rules for rapping.

Rules For Writing A Rap

Select a topic. This should be general to start with; the title will be selected after the rap is finished.

Start writing down everything that comes into your head in sentence fragments and single words. Working with a partner or doing a few together in class will help get you started.

Select or circle the thoughts that you want in your rap. Remember to make every word count. Try to use "FAT" words (words that are very descriptive). e.g. scamper instead of run.

Write in rhyming couplets when in the beginning stages; later you can encourage them to rhyme within the line.

MOST IMPORTANT! Rap is done in 4/4 metre; count 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 when listening to the accompaniment tracks. When you start to write, feel the metre in your head. NOTE: Rap cannot be written in any other metre.

Select the background that feels most comfortable; try a few different styles and tempos.

Add a chorus or repeated section that will be said or sung by a group or the whole class. This adds variety to the composition.

Have Fun!

The lessons will guide your and your students through the process of writing a practice rap; writing a commercial rap; and writing an info rap (based on facts you want to remember). Rap music is a great way to involve all of the kids in your class, regardless of music ability.

A Couple Practice Raps
You can say it slow; you can say it fast,
Rap can be a story and it can last and last
Making a rap can be real tough
Even though we think about a lot of stuff
Rapping should have a steady beat
1 - 2 - 3 - 4, make it sound neat!

Come take a rap of any kind
Slow or fast, I don’t mind
To the beat it has to be
With a theme, that’s the key
That’s the way, say no more
I hope you’ve learned a lot from my rhyme
So come again and say it one more time!
We all know how music can affect the way we feel. Subconsciously, we play music to uplift our mood, dance, or help us relax. Music can invoke powerful memories and help “set the scene” for our life experiences. Research supports the concept that – “Music can greatly enhance our learning and living.”

Why is it that teachers use music in their personal lives but fail to realize the importance it can have in the classroom?

There are many ways, each with a repertoire of classroom techniques, that can be used easily by anyone. You don’t need to be a musician and all ages and levels will experience an increase in the joy of learning by adding music to your lessons.

Try this:

Write or find a poem that you can say to a steady beat of 1-2-3-4.

Example (from The Power of Rap by Barbara Feuring) :

emphasize the underlined words

There are many ways that we are smart

To teach these ways is indeed an art

But if you want to reach ev’ry lad and lass

You’ll use these ways as you teach your class.

Have students clap, step, snap or pat the steady beat while saying the poem. Students can write their own alone or in groups and perform for the rest of the class. It can be about something you are learning in class.

Each student or group can teach their “rap” to the rest of the class. If the students want to add mouth sounds, then someone else can say the words. Most important – keep a steady beat of 1-2-3-4.

The future is here already. Education has to make dramatic changes to the way students’ experience “school”, compared to the classrooms we know of yesterday and today.

By reading and using the information in this book, your students will get a chance to use ‘whole brain’ learning, a method which recognizes that teaching to both hemispheres of the brain is equal and necessary for a complete education. Your vision, like mine, can enable us to make a difference and make our schools better than our wildest dreams.

I hope this book adds a new dimension to your present knowledge of music, Imagine holding a prism to the sun and watching the colors change as you move it. The “SOUND” CLASSROOM will encourage you to view the use of music from a different angle, to improve your teaching and, more importantly, your students’ learning. We have always known the power that music has over our physical and mental states - from improving digestion to getting our heart pumping through aerobic exercise. There is NO substitute for well-chosen music to affect our state of being.

I plan to discuss how you can use music in the classroom both as a relaxant and a stimulant to achieve greater results - for focus and concentration, for controlling physical and mental energy, for increased coordination, performance ability and more.

Music is all around us but in general, our knowledge of its connections to our lives is at an all-time low!

As I work with young children and have used some of the techniques I have been amazed at how their focus and enjoyment has increased over a short period of time. I invite you to try some of the ideas suggested in the following pages and to share your findings.

I do not pretend to be an expert, only a teacher who realizes that music and creative thinking is the key to giving our children and future leaders the edge they will need to shape fulfilling lives.

I urge you to become familiar with such innovative artists as Vangelis, Yanni, Medwyn Goodall, and Stephen Halpern, who give us music that is stimulating, uplifting and in tune with heart and soul.
